How Do I Choose the Right Massage for Me?
How Do I Choose the Right Massage for Me?https://allnaturalwc.com/blog-full-width/
By David Assam, Founder of All Natural Wellness Center | 26 Years of Massage Therapy Experience
If you’ve ever typed “massage near me” into Google and then spent ten minutes staring at a list of service names you don’t fully understand — you’re not alone. Most people choose their massage the same way they choose a restaurant they’ve never been to: they guess, they go with what sounds familiar, or they pick whatever the ad told them to try.
And sometimes it works out. But often, it doesn’t.
After 26 years as a massage therapist and the founder of All Natural Wellness Center in Fort Lauderdale, I can tell you that choosing the wrong massage is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes new clients make. It costs them time. It costs them money. And it delays the relief or results they actually came in for.
This post is going to change that for you.
The Biggest Mistake People Make
Most new clients come in having already decided what they want — usually based on something a friend mentioned or an ad they saw. They’ve made a decision before a single question has been asked about their body.
That’s the problem.
Your body is not a one-size-fits-all situation. What works for your coworker’s back pain might be completely wrong for the tension you’re carrying in your shoulders. What helped your friend relax before her wedding might do nothing for the inflammation you’re dealing with post-surgery.
Choosing a massage based on the name alone — without understanding what your body actually needs right now — is like going to a doctor and telling them what prescription you want before they’ve even examined you.
What a Good Therapist Actually Asks You
When a client comes to me and says “I just want to relax,” I don’t stop there. I start asking questions — because “relax” can mean a hundred different things.
Here’s what I want to know:
- Are you anxious or stressed? Is this mental, emotional, or physical tension?
- How are you sleeping? Poor sleep tells me a lot about what’s happening in your nervous system.
- Do you have any physical pain? Neck, shoulders, lower back — where is it showing up?
- What do you do for work? Are you standing on your feet all day, or sitting in front of a screen? Both create very specific patterns of tension in the body, and knowing this tells me exactly where we need to focus.
That intake conversation is where the real work begins. By the time you get on the table, I already have a clear picture of what your body needs — and it’s often different from what you walked in asking for.
When the Right Massage Isn’t What You Booked
A client came in recently having booked a lymphatic drainage massage. She’d done her research, she knew what MLD was, and she was ready. But as we talked during intake, it became clear that she was under enormous stress. Anxious, tense, physically wound up. Her body was holding a very different kind of burden than what lymphatic work is designed to address.
We made the call together to switch her appointment to a sports deep tissue massage instead — something that could actually work through the tension, address the physical pain, and help reset her nervous system.
She left feeling like a different person.
That’s what happens when you match the right service to what your body actually needs — not just what sounded good when you booked it online.
The Four Massages That Cover Most of What People Need
There are dozens of massage modalities out there, but in my experience, the following four cover the vast majority of what clients come to us for.
Swedish Massage
This is the foundation. Light to medium pressure, long flowing strokes designed to improve circulation and calm the nervous system. It’s not intense or painful — it’s designed to ease you in. Swedish massage is ideal for people who are new to massage, elderly clients, or anyone whose primary goal is relaxation and stress relief. If you’ve never had a professional massage and you’re not sure where to start, this is your entry point.
Sports /Deep Tissue Massage
This is our most popular service at All Natural Wellness Center — and for good reason. Sports/Deep tissue works further into the muscle fiber to address chronic tension, muscle pain, and stress that has physically embedded itself in the body. If you carry stress in your neck and shoulders, if your lower back is constantly tight, if you’re physically active and dealing with soreness or recovery — this is likely your massage. Don’t let the name intimidate you. “Sports” doesn’t mean you have to be an athlete. It means we’re working with your body’s deeper tissue to create real, lasting change.
Prenatal Massage
A woman’s body goes through extraordinary changes over nine months. Water retention, lower back stress, postural shifts, swelling — it compounds fast. Prenatal massage is specifically designed to address these changes safely and gently, helping expectant mothers reduce discomfort, ease water retention, and feel more comfortable in a body that’s rapidly evolving. Our prenatal specialist Melba works with expectant mothers regularly, and the difference it makes for them is remarkable.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is one of the most misunderstood and underutilized services in wellness. It’s not a relaxation massage — it’s medical-grade bodywork designed to move stagnant fluid through the lymphatic system and out of the body. If you’re recovering from surgery, dealing with lymphedema, going through chemotherapy, or experiencing chronic swelling and bloating, MLD can be genuinely life-changing. The principle I always come back to is this: the faster you get moving, the faster you heal. MLD helps your body do exactly that.
Massage Is Not a Luxury. It’s a Necessity.
Most people still think of massage as a treat. Something you do on your birthday, your anniversary, or when you finally hit a wall and need a break. A luxury, not a lifestyle.
I completely disagree.
Massage is medically necessary. Think about what it actually does for your body:
- Reduces stress hormones
- Improves circulation
- Relieves chronic pain
- Improves sleep quality
- Supports mental clarity
- Promotes skin health
- Improves joint mobility
- Accelerates muscle recovery
These aren’t spa talking points. These are documented, measurable benefits to your overall health.
We live in a world that is constantly putting demands on our bodies — physical, mental, emotional. Stress doesn’t stop accumulating just because you took a vacation. Tension doesn’t disappear on its own. Your body is organic, always changing, always responding to the world around it.
You wouldn’t go to the gym once and expect to stay in shape forever. The same logic applies to your body’s need for consistent therapeutic care.
My philosophy is simple: take care of your body, and your body will take care of you. Massage isn’t something you do when you’re falling apart. It’s how you make sure you don’t.
